PDF has an unused feature called incremental update, which means that a PDF file can keep track of changes. Keeping track of changes also means keeping track of all the objects, images and fonts the file has ever contained. So if you were to open a 250 page PDF, remove 249 of the pages and simply Save, the resulting PDF file would actually get LARGER than the original. Save as... is your friend since it completely rewrites the PDF from scratch. However, there is a third solution.
always Reduce File Size...
Under the File menu: Reduce File Size. Choose Acrobat 4.0 in the compatibility dialog that pops up. Acrobat is probably going to say: Conversion Warnings The following objects could not be updated. Their presence may cause problems while opening the PDF in lower versions of Acrobat. - JavaScripts. Click OK and pretend it never happend - your form is now as backwards compatible as it can be.
